Nuclear power plant software...
I've always wondered.. if a nuclear power plant or other nuclear powered facilities (for making bombs or whatnot) are sooo important to be secured, why not develop custom software just for the project and isolate it from the outside world a bit more? Sure, you lose some of the efficiencies of having compatible software, but is there a trade off for a more secure software platform?

OR how about a backup system that reverse engineers existing software but is developed separately -- to minimize the chances of having the same software vulnerabilities? I suppose the hardware would be the same, but at least if a system could fall back onto an independent backup, there would be some redundancy.....
