False sense of security
I wonder if Office subscribers have been warned about this vulnerability. Organizations who enable the link check feature may soon find they have locked up machines and a ransom bill.

Re: Ugh! no more links in emails!
@mhhf1ve but even anonymized data is useful for marketers. They form general pictures on that basis and offer persona models. The downside of that is that they really could be so many steretypes. There was an article on this a little while back. https://contentmarketinginstitute.com/2018/04/personas-stereotypes/

Re: Ugh! no more links in emails!
Well, I just double-checked and Gmail doesn't quite do what I thought. I anonymizes the images in emails via a google proxy, so the marketing people can still tell when you've opened the email they sent you, but they can't get your IP address or browser/OS details.

@mhhf1ve On the other hand, some people don't like that absence of that feature on Gmail. Perhaps it would be possible to set it up with a double opt-in from both the sender and the recipient.

Re: Ugh! no more links in emails!
I like how Gmail hosts all the images in emails.. so that the images in emails aren't used to sneak out privacy-invading data. I hate it when opening an email alerts the sender that it has been opened/read....

Re: Ugh! no more links in emails!
@mhhf1ve Ah the good old days, when emails were simple, and you had no need for super fast internet connections. But the links make marketers very happy, as they can send you emails you simply click to get to their sites and buy more stuff you don't need but think you want.

Ugh! no more links in emails!
Emails should just strip out links... and make them all go through some kind of landing page before re-directing to the destination. I remember when emails were only text. Maybe it's time to go back to pine.... :P
