@batye Yes. I'm sure that the breaches we do get to hear about are only the tip of the iceberg.

Re: steganorphy
@Ariella the sad reality many Co. instead of admiting breach they say oh we have an upgrade and you need to change your password or will be locked out of your account - but in reality they have a security breach - but never admits it...

@Joe Now I'm quite curious. I've sometimes been locked out of accounts. Usually, though, the rep can unlock it without resorting to something that may be considered shady or by dropping hints for me to do something.

Very interesting! I have only ever read about it or seen it as part of a plot in a TV show.

@Ariella: Reminiscent of a time when I was locked out of an account, and support said that there was a way around the lockout but he wasn't allowed to tell me what it was because it involved exploiting a known vulnerability.

Thankfully, he managed to tapdance around to tell me just enough that I could figure out what he was talking about.

Re: steganorphy
I've seen such steganographic drive-bys in action a few times (that I know of...). Thankfully, they were so artless that it was relatively easy to prevent/undo the damage.

If nothing else, that was a comforting answer. Learning about the technique could be good if they are discussing javascript and security.
